Introduction
DB Cargo UK is currently recruiting for a Legal Counsel on a fixed term basis of between 12 to 18 months. This position joins our Legal & Regulatory Affairs department based at our Head Office in Doncaster and offers hybrid working.

Our internal legal team plays a crucial role in managing the company’s legal affairs. They handle everything from contract negotiations and compliance to risk management and litigation. They ensure we stay aligned with all laws and regulations, protect our intellectual property, and provide valuable guidance on corporate governance and employment matters. They also assist with key transactions, helping us navigate legal complexities and protect the business while supporting our overall goals.

What will you be doing?
Reporting into the Senior Legal Counsel, this position will be at the forefront of DBC UK’s commercial activity, predominantly providing key legal support to our procurement, sales, and maintenance colleagues. In addition to excellent exposure to a wide range of commercial contracts, the successful applicant will also have plenty of opportunities to gain experience in a number of other disciplines including delivery of major projects, compliance and regulatory work. You will also ensure the business is kept up-date-to with key legal and regulatory developments and regularly contribute to the delivery of training sessions.
Commercial transactional matters including first point of liaison with procurement, property, and maintenance departments.
Assisting Senior Legal Counsel with the delivery of major projects, significant disputes, regulatory work with a particular focus on health and safety, environmental matters and DBC UK’s response to any crisis/serious incident and related follow-on proceedings (and criminal enforcement in particular), compliance, significant disputes.
Assisting the Senior Legal Counsel in the planning and delivery of regular training and distribution of know-how to DBC UK business to ensure highest levels of legal compliance and awareness are maintained.
Contribute to the development of Group-wide legal support through the close and effective cooperation within the DB Cargo Group Legal function.
Cost effective use and management of external counsel for selected matters requiring specialist advice.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for an individual with a strong background in commercial law, but most of all, a ‘can-do’ attitude. You will positively contribute to the department’s strong team ethic, have a solution driven mindset, welcome the challenge of a diverse and often complex workload, and be willing to challenge the status quo or speak up if something isn’t right.
You will have strong interpersonal skills you can use in both contract negotiations, delivering advice and building relationships with key internal stakeholders.
Along with the above, you will have strong knowledge of core legal counsel areas (in particular contract and tort) with the ability to be a 'generalist' practitioner and tackle a wide range of legal topics.
You will be admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales, and have 2-5 years post qualification experience with a recognised law firm and/or in-house legal function.
